Dennis van Mill is Proprietor of Solid Stairs, Port Macquarie’s leading specialist staircase builder.

He’s a second-generation builder, having completed a Carpenter/Joiner’s apprenticeship with his parents’ staircase construction business in Bateman’s Bay on the NSW South Coast. During his apprenticeship he also completed his Builder’s Certificate.

Dennis established Solid Stairs in Port Macquarie on the NSW Mid North Coast in 2001, and just three years later he took on his first apprentice. In 2008 he installed Solid Stairs' 1000th staircase.

Most of Solid Stairs’ clients are new home construction and renovation companies in the Port Macquarie district and neighbouring regions. However, Dennis also builds staircases for home owners who want to replace their ageing staircases with well-built and attractive new ones.

Making and installing staircases is a specialised field, according to Dennis. Everything must be done properly to ensure a quality product that doesn’t start creaking a couple of years down the track.

Dennis manufactures staircases in a wide range of designs and variations. He works with many different timbers and metals, but his favourite material is Blackbutt, an Australian hardwood that looks great and wears particularly well. Using Blackbutt also makes the most of Australia’s valuable resources, because it’s an Australian plantation timber, thereby minimising waste and preserving our old-growth forests.
